last week’s Samui Regatta
At this years Top of the Gulf Regatta,
Samui fielded a team of 10 sailors in the 152 strong Optimist class and
a helm in the Cruising class (Constanza). Here are some scenes from a
great but very hot regatta.

NEWS
MARCH 26 & 27 2011
March 26 and 27
were the dates for the return match between the Phuket
and Samui teams, so on the morning Friday 25th a convoy of
eight trucks carrying fourteen boats and kids, headed for
the 9am ferry and Phuket.
After a rainy trip, the boats were unloaded
at the charming little Phuket Yacht Club at Ao Yon bay,
where the kids met the 17 strong Phuket team and four from
the Navy club at Songkhla.
Three races were sailed each day under a
range of conditions, with rain, sunshine, light and strong
winds. Simon James and his committee set a trapezoid course
and made sure the course was changed as the winds shifted,
while Grenville with his big catamaran as the spectator boat
had a ready supply of cold beer for the supporters.
The most improved sailor, to this observer,
was Garfield, who in the last race while trailing in fourth
place and heading for the last mark, gybed and sailed to
cross behind the two sailors ahead, then gybed again to
close and take their wind and force her way as inside boat,
to round the mark in second place which she held to the
finish.
The Samui team took the first four places in
the 35 boat fleet, with 1st and 2nd going to two girls,
Stephanie and Garfield. After the prizegiving the PYC hosted
a huge BBQ for the hungry and wet kids and as more rain
threatened, it was decided to load the boats on Monday and
head for home.
That was then the largest storms to ever hit
Southern Thailand kept the team holed up in Surat Thani for
five days awaiting the ferries to commence running.

NOVEMBER 6 &
7 2010
Ten sailors travelled to
Pattaya to compete in the Eastern Seaboard Regatta staged at
the Royal Varuna Yacht Club at Pattaya on 6 & 7th November,
accompanied by Henrik Bjork, Stephano and some sailor's
parents. The Regatta was sailed in fresh 15 knot winds and
the usual strong Pattaya Gulf current. The Samui team did
well to finish in the middle of the 68 boat fleet as they
were competing with the Navy and Thai Sailing Academy kids
who are the best in Thailand. Thomas Fahey got our best
result at 21st.

Regatta 2010 Visitors
After months of inactivity, the SYCR's
monthly mini regatta held a passage race on Saturday 26th
June.
Staged off Tradewinds in Chaweng, the course was around
the big rock Ko Kong Ok on the North East tip of Koh Samui.
A varied collection of beach catamarans, biplane rigged cats
and a sailing dinghy got away at 12 noon in a brisk 12 - 14
knot North Westerly.
KT's bipane catamaran STORM was first off the start line
and was never headed, completing the course in just over two
hours.
Squall's NACRA retired early from a broken mainsail halyard
letting through Stephano's HOBIE 16 thirty minutes later,
closely followed by the other biplane cat, Mick Grover's MIA
NOI.
A BBQ followed with a beer keg which KT stayed with till
the last.

BREAKING NEWS - SEPTEMBER 30 2009
Last
weekend Samui Yacht Club Regatta leased their 7
Optimists to Samui Yacht Club as that club has had
an increase of student sailors, while SYCR had
drifted down to zero for a variety of reasons. This
and with the oncoming NE Monsoon which makes Chaweng
Beach untenable, it was voted this was the better
option where sailing can be held all year round and
as SYC now also has a permanent coach which means
the kids can now sail after school if they wish.
SYCR volunteers have been invited to assist SYC in
any way they can.
A
sailing weekend in remembrance of Stephane Grassett,
who was one of our first sponsors, was held
13/14th June. Stephane tragically drowned while
kite boarding at Reunion Island.

Fragrant Harbour Endeavour Prize - Pun Pun
The Team
March 28 2008
Last weekend, with both clubs at Ban Rak again,
prizes were awarded to the placegetters in the
previous weekend's "Passsage Race to Koh Som".
Stephanie
The prizes were the
Rolex Sydney to Hobart polo shirts donated by our
close friends the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia.
Peam
On hand to help with
Saturday's sailing was visiting sailing coach Khun
Mo from Canada who was on hand to rescue beginner
Jasmine and sail her boat back to Mermaid Resort.
Petch

Stephanie, 2nd place Peam and 3rd place Petch.
Cleaning Up
March 22 2008
Both days, a
triangular course was set and as ususal Amanda
won all the races with the boys Poppee and Sky
sharing the minor placings.
Windguru had
predicted 28 knots onshore wind for the weekend
but Thai Met, Malaysian Shipping Forecasts,
Accuweather and Yahoo Weather all forecast 8
knots, so we stayed put at Tradewinds and as the
weekend drew near Windguru likewise revised
their estimates down and we had two of the most
perfect days sailing.
Mayan's rope trick
March 15 2008
Last weekend we were treated to a visit by the
lovely Mayan who is an Israeli Optimst coach.
Now, the Israeli kids are the world's 4th
best, so we assembled both the clubs at Mermaid
Resort for the kids to learn from a visiting
coach.
Mayan coaching
As we found, the kids have to be kept
entertained, whether the in between sailing
sessions offers them kayaking, boogie boarding,
swimming pool activity or even croquet !
Steve from Oz lends a hand
Mayan showed the kids her rope trick, whereby
two kids are attached by their wrists and have
to work out a way to free themselves.
Six pairs of kids tried every combination
without success, so when Mayan attached herself
to visiting volunteer "Steve from Oz" and with a
quick flick of the wrists they were separated.
Mayan's rope trick #2
The kids were furious and after another 30
minute session, they still hadn't figured it
out, but I have and it is a secret.
Mayan with new member
Rather than race around buoys, the kids
unanimously voted for a passage race to Koh Som,
so a start line was set and ten boats enjoyed a
fast downwind sail to the island.
The first three were Stehanie, followed by
Peam and Petch (all from SYC). After an hour of
play and drinks, they restarted for the long
beat back to Koh Samui.
Drinks at Koh Som
Again Stephanie triumphed with Peam second and
Amanda third.
On Sunday seven boats from both
clubs assembled off Mermaid Resort and raced
three long triangle courses in a brisk 15 knot
offshore breeze with Nuttaphol (SYC) winning all
three races. SYCR welcomes two new members 11
year old Jasmine and 10 year old Jin.
Swimming pool liner made into a boat
March 8 2008
Last weekend to
break the boredom of rounding buoys, the kids
were sent on a 5 mile passage race to Coral Cove
in South Chaweng.
With a fair 8 knots
of breeze the kids landed after just an hour of
sailing after throwing in a few tacks to clear
the headlands.
This is a popular
site for the kids as they delight in exploring
the many rock formations and snorkel in the
clear waters and after lunch it was a one tack
reach back to Tradewinds.
Amanda sailed with
her new friend 10 year old Jin who weighs in at
just 20 kilos and was first to arrive.
After much arm
wrenching the coach persuaded Amanda to swap
from her favorite Foxy Lady Optimist to another
boat and on the return leg, it was Sky in Foxy
Lady who arrived first proving that perhaps it
was the better rig.
