Jan 19 & 20 Junior Sailing
Last weekends racing at Mermaid Resort
took until 5 pm on Saturday, as some 28 kids competed a long
windward/leeward course.
Martin, Poppee, Stephanie, Bier and
Sky all won a race and confirms them for the team to race in
Pattaya 2/3 Feb.
Sunday's racing was interrupted by
Lek's speedboat and toys arriving to celebrate his daughter,
Natalie's birthday.
With BBQ, cookies, beer on hand along
with free spins around the bay towing the hotdog and the
doughnut, all racing was cancelled for the rest of the day.
Without doubt the highlight of the day
was watching the 6 instructors being repeatedly dumped from
the hotdog, much to the kids delight.
Jan 12 & 13 Junior Sailing
A break in the N.E. Monsoon, allowed
the weekend sailing school to return to Chaweng and
Tradewinds.
As Saturday was Childrens Day, the
largest turnout of 28 kids turned up and demolished some 130
muffins and carrot cake supplied by Tradewinds kitchen.
With the Samui team being invited to
race at Ocean Marina, Pattaya on February 2nd 3rd, the
afternoons were devoted to racing solo with proper regatta
starts with flags, sound horn and committee boat.
Saturday saw Martin take the honours
but Sundays 10 races Stephanie came out 1st followed by Sky
2nd and Poppie and Bier tied for 3rd. Both days experienced
light 6-8 knot winds.

Jan
5 & 6 2008 Junior Sailing
The year's first
weekend's sailing had the kids for the first time sailing
under racing conditions, with timed starts together with the
appropriate flags and a sound horn.
Each received a laminated
page of starting sequence instructions and a dvd to study at
home.
The afternoon sessions
will now have a series of deep water starts between a
starting boat and a buoy followed by a windward/leeward
course.
By Sunday, they had all
mastered the different flags and some great starts were
witnessed. Final results were; 1st Stephanie, 2nd Bier, 3rd
Jam, 4th Florian, 5th Poppee, 6th Mai, Sky 7th.

Weekend of 29 & 30 December, the kids were treated
to a sail
on big boy's toys.
Mick Grover from
Yachting Siam who has joined our list of coaches, kindly
offered his Elliott 7 for trips around the bay, where the
kids all had a chance to helm. |

JUNIOR SAILING
UPDATE:
DECEMBER 8 & 9 2007
With the arrival of
two more Optimists, the fleet has now grown to 5
boats, 2 kayaks and a rescue boat, in just 3
months and there are now 43 members signed up.
Last weekend's (
Dec. 8/9 ) sailing was held at Mermaid Resort
again, which was nice and sheltered from the 22
knot Easterlies prevailing and the first session
the kids were sent off to round a buoy placed
300 m. offshore, then returning to jibe around a
buoy 20 m. from the beach and then out to the
offshore buoy again and returning.
Some wild jibes
were witnessed and a few began to learn to get
their heads down fast during this manoeuvre but
all the boats stayed upright. 8 of the best
sailors then match raced solo with the final
placings 1st Amanda, 2nd Poppy and 3rd Martin,
but the tiny 25 kg.
Stephanie sailed
with a lot of confidence and although leading in
most of her races, tended to fluff the tack at
the outer mark.
Sunday sailed in lighter winds,
saw two boys, Martin and Bier tie for 1st place
with the tiny girl, Mai taking 2nd and Poppy
3rd.
As the logistics
get larger, invariably there are people to step
in the breech with I.P.S. Co Ltd. now providing
two trucks along with John's truck to move all
the equipment, while on the water, visiting
tourist Peter and returning yachtsman Martin
pitched in to help.

JUNIOR SAILING
UPDATE:
DECEMBER 1 & 2 2007
With stiff 22
knot Easterlies and big surf on the East coast,
last weekend's sailing was held out of Mermaid
Resort, Ban Rak and with two buoys laid, the
juniors were given their first taste of regatta
type windward/leewards course racing.
Saturday began
with a 14 question written test and from the 12
juniors attending, top marks went to Amanda and
Stephanie (100%) followed by Martin and Nong
Jam.
Owing to the
steady 20 knot breeze, the boats were sailed two
up, where they all managed four races each
without a capsize.
Sunday's second
session, the 8 most experienced sailors competed
in a solo sailoff.
Amanda completed the ftrst 3
races, winning them all with ease, followed by
the little 25 Kg Stephanie who had to race
Martin for a place in the Final.
Martin handled
the strong conditions better and after losing
his first race against Amanda came back to race
her again in the Final only to be beaten by her
again.
Final results
Amanda 4-0, Martin 3-2, Stephanie and Mina both
2-1

August 9 2008

At last a weekend with no
regattas, rain, surf or school holidays, the Junior's
program had a good turnout weekend 9/10 August, with three
of our regular sailors, able to take out four new hopefuls
who were from the Wat Sawang Arom School. With a steady 10
knots and gusts of 15, the new lads quickly grabbed the
basics and were hiking out and helming with confidence.
Visitors from Australia Ken and Greta presented all the kids
with new Aussie caps and Koala dolls (what else ?). These
four new lads will be sailing solo for the first time next
weekend with some short races thrown in.
