SAMUI YACHT CLUB REGATTA - KOH
SAMUI SAILING
June 2007 Regatta Report
This month’s regatta was
hosted by Santiburi Resort at Maenam Beach Race 1 With a 9 knot offshore
breeze, the race committee set a running start, the course was a 10 mile
leg to the small birds nest island, Koh Tae Nok, on the West side of Koh
Phangan, rounding its offshore limestone pinnacle and back to the start.
The Committee Boat The Junk
Santiburi Koh Tae Nok is a rugged hilly island with three beautiful
beaches and is leased to an influential Thai from Koh Tao, to harvest
the island’s bird nests and this individual has placed armed security
guards on the island who threaten to shoot anyone who sets foot on the
island.
The 8m.Firefly racing
catamaran Pagatoon, grabbed the lead and rounded the pinnacle in two
hours, followed by the Hobie 16’s of Santiburi’s boat boy Khun Kok
followed by his manager Stephane, then a long gap to John Stall’s Nacra
4.5 followed by Kunta’s Coco Blues.
As the fleet tacked to round
the pinnacle, whenever the boats tacked to close to the shore, they were
met by a friendly Thai waving a gun on the beach. On top of this, the
pinnacle was inhabited by nesting frigate birds who dive bombed the
crews as they rounded the rock, so it came as a relief to finally set
sail for home.
The wind gradually faded in
the late afternoon and Pagatoon was first to finish after 5 hours of
sailing, followed by Kok’s H16 and the Nacra. The other H16 and Coco
Blues retired and were assisted to the finish and retired.
The crews were then treated
to a magnificent hot and cold buffet, some of them never having tasted
smoked mackerel or imported olives before, while the grilled swordfish
steaks with tartare sauce had many going for a second helping. A keg of
beer, compliments of Singha beer completed the evening.
Race 2 Sunday dawned with a
fresher breeze and the committee set a 3 mile course, rounding the
offshore rock Hin Mu Yai and returning. Pagatoon set off with the only
spinnaker in the fleet to round the rock first, followed by Kok’s H16
and Coco Blues with Coco taking the race on handicap.
Race 2 The breeze had picked
up to 12 knots and shifted to the North by the next race and the fleet
enjoyed a fast reach to the rock and the beat back with 15 knot gusts,
had all the boats back in, in just over an hour. Pagatoon saved her time
to finish first followed by Coco Blues and Kok’s H16
